 CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS IN PORTUGAL

A touching custom in Portugal reminds us that during holidays, we have to bring to our minds those who are no longer in life. During the “Cosoda”, the Christmas breakfast, an extra chair is placed on the kitchen table. There, those who are not anymore in life , will be able to sit with us.

 

 CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS IN AUSTRIA

In many Austrian cities, men are dressed as Krampus. According to the  mythology , it is a devil creature. A terrifying monster for the naughty kids . A  monster  who appears to punish those who were ruthless. Of course, this scary appearance alone is considered to be a good punishment. Krampu’s custom is rooted in German tradition. Today, young men are dressing like Krampus and go out to the streets, terrorizing children and young girls, in the first week of December, the night of December 5.

Χριστουγεννιάτικο ημερολόγιο

Τις 4 εβδομάδες πριν τα Χριστούγεννα τις ονομάζουν οι γερμανόφωνοι λαοί Advent. Προέρχεται από τη λατινική λέξη «adventus» που σημαίνει «ερχομός». Για τους Χριστιανούς αυτή η περίοδος είναι η περίοδος προετοιμασίας για τη γέννηση του Χριστού. Πάρα πολύ αγαπημένα είναι τα χριστουγεννιάτικα ημερολόγια στην προ-χριστουγεννιάτικη περίοδο.

Η ιστορία του ημερολογίου ανάγεται στον 19^ο αιώνα. Το πρώτο τυπωμένο ημερολόγιο δημιουργήθηκε τον 20^ο αιώνα. Πίσω από τα 24 παραθυράκια του υπήρχαν παλιότερα στίχοι της Αγίας Γραφής ή μικρές εικόνες. Στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1950 δημιουργήθηκε το πρώτο ημερολόγιο με σοκολάτα.

Με το χριστουγεννιάτικο ημερολόγιο τα παιδιά, αλλά και οι μεγάλοι, μετράνε τις μέρες για τα Χριστούγεννα και ανοίγουν κάθε μέρα ένα παραθυράκι το οποίο κρύβει ένα σοκολατάκι ή κάποιο παιχνιδάκι. Στην αγορά υπάρχουν πολλά διαφορετικά ημερολόγια. Πολλές οικογένειες, όμως, φτιάχνουν όλοι μαζί το δικό τους ημερολόγιο και αυτό τους φέρνει αυτές τις άγιες μέρες πιο κοντά.

Χριστουγεννιάτικο στεφάνι – Πως προσμένουν στη Γερμανία τα Χριστούγεννα

Ένα πολύ σημαντικό στοιχείο στη χριστουγεννιάτικη διακόσμηση κάθε σπιτιού στη Γερμανία είναι το παραδοσιακό χριστουγεννιάτικο στεφάνι. Η ιστορία του ξεκινά στα μέσα του 19^ου αιώνα.

Τότε ένας έμπορος στην πόλη του Αμβούργου, ο Johann Hinrich, ίδρυσε ένα καταφύγιο για τα φτωχά και ορφανά παιδάκια της πόλης, το «Rauhe Haus». Τα παιδιά τον ρωτούσαν συνεχώς πότε επιτέλους θα έρθουν τα Χριστούγεννα και εκείνος σκαρφίστηκε μια πολλή ωραία ιδέα. Πήρε έναν παλιό τροχό από άμαξα και τοποθέτησε επάνω του 24 κεριά, ένα για κάθε μία μέρα πριν από την Παραμονή των Χριστουγέννων. Για να τονίσει ιδιαίτερα τις Κυριακές που παρεμβάλλονταν, έβαλε 4 μεγάλα κόκκινα κεριά. Κάθε μέρα ανάβανε και από ένα κερί και έτσι τα παιδιά έβλεπαν πόσο πλησίαζαν τα Χριστούγεννα.

Αυτό το στεφάνι υιοθετήθηκε αρχικά από την Ευαγγελική Εκκλησία, αλλά αργότερα το έβρισκε κανείς ολοένα και σε περισσότερα νοικοκυριά και τέλος σε πολλές Καθολικές εκκλησίες. Έπειτα, προστέθηκαν τα κλαδιά από έλατο και τα κεριά μειώθηκαν σε 4 που αντιπροσωπεύουν τις 4 Κυριακές πριν τα Χριστούγεννα. Την πρώτη Κυριακή ανάβουν το πρώτο κερί, τη δεύτερη το δεύτερο κερί κ.ο.κ. Μετά το 1945 διαδόθηκε αυτό το έθιμο σε όλο τον κόσμο.

Στο καταφύγιο του Johann Hinrich, στη διάσημη εκκλησία του Αμβούργου «Michel» αλλά και στη Βουλή της Γερμανίας χρησιμοποιείται μέχρι και σήμερα το παραδοσιακό χριστουγεννιάτικο στεφάνι με τα 24 κεριά.

Το αστέρι της ελπίδας

Μια φορά και έναν καιρό υπήρχε ένα αστέρι που έλαμπε φωτεινό στο διάστημα. Υπήρχαν αμέτρητα άλλα αστέρια γύρω του, τόσα πολλά, που δεν ήξερε από πού ξεκινούσαν και που τελείωναν. Καθένα από αυτά τα αστέρια ήταν τόσο μακριά το ένα από το άλλο που δεν γνώριζαν τίποτε το ένα για το άλλο. Το καθένα ήταν μόνο του στο μεγάλο σκοτεινό τίποτα.

Πέρασε μία αιωνιότητα και κατάλαβε ότι η λάμψη του σιγά σιγά χανόταν. Σε λίγο θα πεθάνω και το φως μου θα εξαφανιστεί και σε κανέναν δε θα λείψω. Υπάρχουν πολλά άλλα. Η ύπαρξη ενός αστεριού δε σημαίνει κάτι. Αυτή η κατάσταση το έκανε πολύ μελαγχολικό και δεν έβλεπε κανέναν λόγο πια να υπάρχει.

Στο άπειρο υπήρχε ένας μπλε πλανήτης που όμοιος δεν υπήρχε άλλος στον γαλαξία του. Το αστέρι τον βρήκε υπέροχο και είχε κάτι μοναδικό και μαγικό. Ο ήλιος τον έλουζε με το φως του και εκείνος γυρνούσε γύρω του για να ζεσταθεί. Και εκείνος ήταν μόνος του, μακριά από τους άλλους πλανήτες. «Είμαστε μόνοι μας, μόνοι μας στο σύμπαν», είπε το αστέρι.

Στον μπλε πλανήτη μακριά από το αστέρι ήταν σε ένα σπίτι ένα κοριτσάκι το οποίο καθόταν στο παράθυρο και παρακολουθούσε τον έναστρο ουρανό. Η νύχτα ήταν καθαρή και ήταν Παραμονή Χριστουγέννων. Το κοριτσάκι ήταν ευχαριστημένο. «Έχω τους καλύτερους γονείς, μένω σε ένα πολύ ωραίο σπίτι, είμαστε όλοι υγιείς και έχω πολλούς φίλους. Είμαι πραγματικά ευτυχισμένη και αύριο θα πάρω τα δώρα μου».

«Περισσότερο θα ευχόμουν τώρα, αυτή τη στιγμή, να έρθει ένα σημάδι από το Θεό. Εκείνος είναι σίγουρα ευτυχισμένος, γιατί αύριο είναι ξανά Χριστούγεννα και οι άνθρωποι τουλάχιστον αυτή τη μέρα, μπορούν να είναι λίγο πιο ευγενικοί ο ένας στον άλλον. Δε θα ήταν ωραία;», σκέφτηκε.

Το αστέρι αισθάνθηκε ότι ήρθε ο ώρα του. «Τώρα θα ξεκινήσω και θα γίνω ένα με το άπειρο σκοτάδι. Αφέθηκε και έσερνε πίσω του ένα μακρύ, ελαφρύ πέπλο όπως ένα φωτεινό σώμα και πέρασε μέσα στο διάστημα, αισθανόμενο ξαφνικά μια βαθιά ικανοποίηση και αγαλλίαση.

Το μικρό κορίτσι στη γη είδε αυτό το όμορφο πεφταστέρι. Ήταν τόσο φωτεινό και όμορφο να το κοιτάζει. Κινούνταν σαν μια λαμπερή κορδέλα μέσα στη μαύρη νύχτα.

«Καλά Χριστούγεννα, Θεούλη μου!» γέλασε η μικρή κοπέλα και χειροκροτούσε ενθουσιασμένη. Η ευχή μου πραγματοποιήθηκε. «Εγώ πρέπει απλά να πιστεύω σ’ αυτό και να κοιτάω προσεκτικά, γιατί τότε θα δω ένα σημάδι ελπίδας στο σκοτάδι. Σε ευχαριστώ».

My Christmas destination ATHENS, GREECE

   Athens is a popular and amazing city! You can visit lots of museums, galleries, theaters and archaeological sites. There are many street markets at Monastiraki and you can stroll around for hours. Also, you can take a selfie in front of the Parthenon! You should visit the National Garden and the Museum of Acropolis. You should visit the fantastic Attic zoo park, too. You can taste traditional Greek food and of course you could enjoy the view of the city and your drink from famous bars and restaurants!!

DON’Ts:

Don’t eat anywhere, ask for suggestions.

Don’t walk alone late at night, it can be dangerous.

Don’t forget extra money, it’s quite expensive.

METSOVO GREECE

Things you can do:

Metsovo is an excellent winter destination and an amazing town. There, you can enjoy hiking in the alleys of Metsovo and visiting its beautiful square which has two large bear statues. You can also visit lots of Museums, like the folklore museum of Tositsa which has traditional antiques.

My suggestions:

If you want to enjoy a good-quality food, you should definitely visit Metsovos’ traditional restaurants. You can taste delicious fresh meats and also enjoy the fantastic view of the snow-covered mountains. Finally, Metsovo has organized ski resorts, where you can have a hot drink in a cozy atmosphere.

DON’Ts:

× Don’t stay out late at night because it gets really cold and it snows a lot.

× Don’t visit Metsovo during high season. It’s really expensive.

× Don’t drive without car chains. It can be dangerous when it snows.

My ideal Christmas destination: Montreal, Canada

Things you can do:

Montréal is a big, busy, exhilarating city, with so much to see and do. I would like to give you some ideas and inspiration for your next trip to Montréal so that you can explore as many «moments» as you can in the city. Think of them as bite-sized snacks of information to whet your appetite for the big buffet of choices you have when you get here!

My suggestions:

You should visit the old city which is amazing. Montreal is a multicultural city without racism.

With Montréal’s nightlife, there’s never a dull moment. A wander during the day, the city becomes supercharged after dark, igniting a fun-loving, welcoming edginess rarely found anywhere else. At microbreweries, jazz bars, dance clubs, live music venues, rooftop terraces and everything in between, rub shoulders with an eclectic mix of professionals, students, musicians, artists and fashionistas from around the world. Start the night early with a «5 à 7» happy hour pint with locals or sip cocktails with movie stars, go show hopping at a music festival or stay out late dancing to whatever beat moves you.
Montreal is considered to be a very safe city, but it is not the safest one in Canada. Tourists need to be watchful and pay attention to the suspicious people around them in order to avoid any kind of unpleasant situations while in Montreal.

And of course, you have to visit Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal and all streets you should also visit all the squares of Montreal. They are beautiful!!!!!

Holidays in New York

There’s always something to celebrate in New York!

Thinks you can do:

New York is an excellent destination and the most amazing city in the world! Guests can book a holiday package so they can visit almost all holiday events. Some of them are Capital Holiday Lights in the Park, Winter Light Festival, Lights on the River Festival, Times Square Ball Drop and New Year’s Eve Buffalo Ball Drop.

My suggestions:

You can find Lombardi’s Pizza at 32 Spring Street, where they serve pizza baked in coal-fired ovens and it’s the first pizzeria to open in New York. You must take a selfie in front of Statue of Liberty National Monument, also you can see the most beautiful view from the Empire State Building Observatory. Finally, you could visit the big New York Aquarium.

O.A.S.TH

In our days, people move  to work or to college using some means of transportation such as cars, motobikes, buses and others. In Thessaloniki many people use the bus to go somewhere and these buses belong to an organization called O.A.S.TH. This organization has some advantages and a lot of disadvantages.

One the one hand, using the buses of  O.A.S.TH   has some benefits for people of Thessaloniki. One benefit is that they provide cheap movement for the people, in order not to pay a lot of money. In addition, they don’t pollute the environment , while cars do. Finally, they provide fast transportation to commute to a place.

On the other hand, in contrast with the advantages there are many disadvantages. One disadvantage is that, the buses are late a lot to arrive at a station. As a result, the people are waiting a lot to take them. This organization  (O.A.S.TH) doesn’t include a lot of buses. As a result, the people suffer everyday in order to go somewhere, while some others, due to the huge crowds which prevail inside the buses,  can’t even get inside. Futhermore, some buses break down in the middle of a route. As a result, the people who are in  , have to wait for another bus to come and get it something that  is terrible.

To sum up, for a safe and better transportation of people, the O.A.S.TH must take some measures. The most important measure that should be taken is to bring many more buses, in order to provide lots of routes to the crowd and as a result  people won’t have to wait a lot in a stop.
